Windfall

A sudden, often unexpected sum of money, such as a bonus, inheritance or tax refund.

A windfall is a one-off influx of money outside your normal income. Choosing to invest or pay down debt with a windfall — rather than absorbing it into spending — can give a lasting boost to your finances.

Examples

  • Investing a work bonus instead of spending it turns a windfall into long-term growth.
