Lifestyle Inflation

The tendency to spend more as your income rises, eroding your savings rate.

Lifestyle inflation (or lifestyle creep) is the gradual increase in spending that often accompanies pay rises. Left unchecked, it keeps your savings rate flat even as you earn more, delaying financial independence. Directing raises toward investments counteracts it.

Examples

  • Upgrading your car and apartment every time you get a raise is lifestyle inflation.
