About the fire number calculator
Your FIRE number is the size of invested portfolio that would let you cover your annual expenses indefinitely. Using a safe withdrawal rate — often 4% — it is estimated as your annual expenses divided by that rate, or roughly 25 times expenses at 4%.
The calculator also estimates how many years it might take to reach that number, based on what you have invested today, how much you add each year and an assumed rate of return.
Frequently asked questions
Why 25 times expenses?
Dividing by a 4% withdrawal rate is the same as multiplying annual expenses by 25. It comes from research on historical retirement withdrawals and is a starting estimate, not a guarantee — longer retirements may warrant a lower rate.
Is the years-to-FI estimate accurate?
It is a simplified projection using a constant return and constant annual saving. Real markets are volatile and life changes, so treat it as an illustration for learning rather than a precise forecast.
