Total Return

An investment's full return, combining price change plus income like dividends and interest.

Total return captures everything an investment earns: changes in price plus any dividends or interest, usually assuming that income is reinvested. It gives a truer picture of performance than price movement alone.

Examples

  • A stock that rises 6% and pays a 2% dividend delivers roughly an 8% total return.
