Dividend

A share of a company's profits paid out to shareholders, usually in cash.

A dividend is a distribution of a company's earnings to its shareholders. Reinvesting dividends lets them buy more shares that themselves earn future dividends, which is a clear demonstration of compounding at work.

Examples

  • A fund paying a 2% dividend yield returns about $2,000 a year on a $100,000 holding.
