Real Return

Your investment return after subtracting inflation.

Real return measures how much your purchasing power actually grows, by adjusting the nominal return for inflation. It is the more meaningful figure for long-term planning, because it reflects what your money can really buy in the future.

Examples

  • An 8% return with 3% inflation is roughly a 5% real return.
