Vesting

The process of gradually earning full ownership of employer-provided benefits over time.

Vesting is the schedule by which you gain full rights to employer contributions, such as a 401(k) match or stock grants. Until benefits are vested, leaving your job may forfeit some of them, so understanding the schedule matters when changing employers.

Examples

  • A 4-year vesting schedule means you fully own employer contributions after four years.
