Tax-Loss Harvesting

Selling investments at a loss to offset taxable gains and lower your tax bill.

Tax-loss harvesting is the practice of realising investment losses to offset capital gains (and sometimes ordinary income), reducing taxes owed while staying invested in a similar asset. Rules such as wash-sale restrictions apply, so it should be done carefully.

Examples

  • Selling a fund that dropped in value can offset gains realised elsewhere that year.
