Sinking Fund

Money saved gradually toward a known future expense.

A sinking fund is savings set aside little by little for a specific, expected cost — such as car maintenance, holidays or insurance premiums. Spreading the cost over time prevents these predictable expenses from derailing your budget or emergency fund.

Examples

  • Saving $50 a month for a $600 annual insurance bill is a sinking fund.
