ETF (Exchange-Traded Fund)

A fund that trades like a stock and usually tracks an index at low cost.

An exchange-traded fund holds a basket of investments and can be bought or sold throughout the trading day like a single stock. Index ETFs are popular with long-term investors because they offer broad diversification with very low fees.

Examples

  • A total-market ETF gives instant exposure to the whole stock market in one purchase.
