Discretionary Spending

Non-essential spending on wants rather than needs.

Discretionary spending covers optional purchases — dining out, entertainment, travel and other wants — that you could reduce without affecting essentials. It is usually the easiest area of a budget to adjust when trying to raise your savings rate.

Examples

  • Cutting back on restaurant meals reduces discretionary spending.
